Lowcountry Produce Beaufort SC

It’s become a habit of increasing frequency for me to walk into a place and immediately fall in love with the atmosphere. None have struck me quite as intensely as the former post office turned daily eatery like Lowcountry Produce in Beaufort, SC. It’s as if the owners themselves were catering to the fact that I would fall head over heels in love with their custom green paint color, large pendant chandeliers, and fantastic menu selections. It was enough to have me contemplating buying real estate next door so I could frequent this place daily.

If you’re like me, two years ago you may have never heard of Beaufort, SC. This charming seaside town is one of the oldest settlements in the South and was spared by General Sherman’s flames on his march to the Sea. Some say it’s because of the beautiful town and charming hospitality, others say it’s because there was a woman of unparalleled beauty living here. Either way, I’m thankful for his aversion to this city so that 170 years later we get to enjoy a sunny afternoon in a beautiful light filled dining spot located in town.

When you walk in, you will be immediately captured by the beautiful bright sage green that adorns all the wood trim that frames the subway tile filled with dark grout and as you look up, stunning pendant chandeliers rise overhead. Your other senses kick into gear and suddenly your nose is flooded with scents of buttered biscuits and sticky doughnuts before the turn of lunch when you’ll have to choose between a variety of sandwiches and salads.

Since we were operating on brunch hour, I decided to go with a bloody mary that was appropriately served with pickled veg and a pop of lemon. While my mom went the healthy route, I couldn’t pass by the opportunity to have a burger with a side of fries. The huge patty came served with a large slice of tomato, American cheese, and homemade bread and butter pickles- just as God intended.

After lunch was devoured and our appetites satiated, I wandered about the market getting a glimpse of all the treats tucked behind the glass cases and taking a mental note of what I would need to take back with me to Atlanta before we left. There were a variety of sweets to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth from chocolate things to frosted sugar cookies. Each one screaming to take them home with me if one of the non-perishables from the shelves didn’t vie for my attention first.

After lingering long enough staring at the impeccable décor and taking a million mental notes on how to add some Beaufort charm to my apartment, I asked the waitress what color the green was. She told me very matter-of-factly that “Why it’s ‘Lowcountry Produce Green’ of course! Sherwin Williams custom mixed it for us.” A true treasure on the seaside, this little place is not to be missed.
