Sweet Like a Georgia Peach Cheerios

Thanks to General Mills Cereal who provided me with a couple of boxes of their new product to try as well as sponsoring this post. Although there was a sponsored element, all opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the sponsorships that help keep Darling Down South running.

In my house growing up, one of the best things about being an early riser was getting to pick which channel you’d claim for watching Saturday morning cartoons and polishing off the last of the best cereal in the cabinet. While many boxes of cereal rotated through my cupboard, only one was a repeat favorite of mine: Honey Nut Cheerios. They were like regular Cheerios, but -to a seven-year-old kid, they were way better due to the way they held up to milk and how they turned the milk into a sweet elixir to be enjoyed once all of the cereal was gone.

Now that I’m older, my love for Honey Nut Cheerios hasn’t waned. On “cheat day” you can typically find me indulging in a larger-than-normal bowl of Cheerios, happily reimagining the days when Rugrats and Hey Arnold plagued my Saturday morning. Nothing could come between me and my Cheerios on the weekend, that is until I discovered General Mill’s new limited-edition Peach Cheerios flavor. This Spring, you can find these Cheerios at your local grocery store and it’s like taking a trip to the Peach Orchard, but without the extensive trek up I-75N!

I don’t know anyone who can’t resist the temptation of biting into a juicy peach picked fresh from the tree. Sadly, with our less than stellar peach crop last year, I didn’t get to recreate one of my favorite flatbreads during the summer nor experiment with any new dessert recipes. As any antsy Southerner can attest, I am properly suffering from peach withdrawal until I discovered these Cheerios!

I’m no stranger to peach flavored things. It seems every peach season a new peach flavored item gets released with a less than authentic peach flavoring but that’s not the case with these Cheerios. As soon as you open the box, you can actually smell the peaches. As you dump the contents of the box into your bowl and cover in milk, the smell grows more intense.

Although the first bite of these Cheerios isn’t like biting into the flesh of a ripe peach, the flavor is almost the same and then the familiarity of Honey Nut Cheerios pops in and I’m wishing I was sitting in front of the TV again during the summer of 1997 with my kitten pajamas and rightfully claiming ownership to the remote. It’s hard not to go back for a second bowl, and luckily, now that I’m an adult, I don’t have to restrain myself.
